Great review, what do you think would be a great high-end compact if money was not an issue?

Nice to reed, I agree with allen. I own both camera's, there is no camera witch give me such a trill. Of course, my Canon 5D mark II has more possibilities, but the results even with very good primes, no the Sigma is the winner. It is more film like. I use the DP1 on hikes, where I have no problem what so ever about the speed. Maybe the only thing I regret is why the Sigma DP has not begun with a 35 mm. But this is absolute the best compact you can buy, if you take the time. I do not own one camera without a spare battery, how good the battery is, it dies on you when you do not want it. So buy a spare battery.

Hi Peter, thanks for putting part one together. Very informative and balanced. Have had the DP1 since it was initially released, and love the image quality (although have been frustrated with the DP1 low light focus, speed and screen - probably in that order). Trying to get a handle on the difference between the cameras - and your review is great for that.
Enjoy your trip to Ireland. Look forward to part two and a few more shots.

Thanks for the comments John and Lars. As I use this camera I am increasingly aware of its shortcomings but I am continually blown away by the images.

I'm glad to hear that my initial thoughts on the DP2 mirror those of other photographers.

Thanks Peter... I can 100% support your review, it reflect my experience with DP2.. I use mine for travel photos, I am on business trips all the time and always felt that there was to much compromise with digital compacts - in the old days with film, you could get an outstanding little camera like Olympus XA or Ricoh GR, DP2 brings us there - almost - my main concern though is battery life, unfortunately I was not able to get an extra battery the place I bought my DP2... so my verdict is as follows: DP2+1battery=Not Recommended DP2+2 or even 3 batteries Highly recommended.

Happy shooting

Great review,

I have had my DP2 since early May and love it.
In my view it is a supplement to a DSLR not a replacement. it does not have the same experience of use as a DSLR but I prefer the DP2's images. By the way i also use an Olympus E3 plus 12-60 lens.
I would only recommend it to a serious photographer as all its short comings are completely overshadowed by its incredible image output.

Cheers, John

Great initial review! Looking froward to seeing more.

I'm curious if this camera would make a good upgrade from my Olympus E-420 + 25mm f/2.8 lens.
